All our practice nurses are qualified registered nurses, and have also gained a diploma in specialist areas where they manage long term conditions such as diabetes and asthma. Also critical to the nursing team are our trained healthcare assistants.
Some of the specialist nurses have taken further training which allows them to write certain prescriptions and order X-rays directly for you.
The team’s work is divided into six main areas:

Integrated nursing team
The community team spend most of their day visiting patients in their homes for wound dressing, palliative care and generally providing support in the community. A community administrative assistant also supports them and organises visits for the community nurse
Midwife
We also have two community midwives supporting our practice. They run our antenatal clinics at The Hub in Alma Road, Kingswood, and visit new mums up to ten days after delivery. They also offer breast-feeding support, postnatal care and advice for new parents.
Nurse administrators
Our nurse administrators are valuable members of the nursing team and maintains the practice clinical recall system for our long term condition clinics to ensure patients attend for their annual reviews as well as coding and entering data, and ensuring an excellent standard of patient records.
There are various types of nurse appointments available within the practice
The healthcare assistant runs blood clinics, performs NHS health checks, blood pressure and weight management checks, perform ECGS and assist with coil fits and minor operations.
The healthcare practitioner performs the above as well as hypertension reviews, gives various types of injections including flu immunisations. She also performs dressings, removes clips and sutures, undertakes ear syringing and spirometry (breathing tests).
Nurses provide all of the above as well as performing more complex wound care, running baby immunisation clinics, travel clinics, contraception and sexual health screening, cervical smears, hypertension and cardiovascular annual reviews to name a few.
The chronic disease nurses are skilled, experienced and qualified to undertake annual and interim chronic disease assessments and management, including cardiovascular disease, asthma and COPD, diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
The specialist nurses provide urgent care appointments, available on the day ,for patients with acute ill health. They are all very experienced and highly qualified nurses trained at an advanced level enabling them to refer patients appropriately to other services including admitting patients to hospital when the need arises, order x-rays if needed, and prescribe any necessary medication. There is always a GP in the building if their assistance was required.
