Midwife and Antenatal Clinics
Accessing the Midwife
On confirmation of pregnancy, you should make an appointment to see the Midwife. This is called a "1st booking appointment".
This is an opportunity to discuss your social, medical and, if relevant, your previous pregnancy history. Together you can make plans for further appointments, scans, and to choose the hospital that you wish to give birth in as well as receiving advice about how to look after yourself in pregnancy and what screening and blood tests you will need.
The Midwife will book future appointments with you at agreed schedules for regular follow-ups and ongoing advice.
Antenatal Clinics
Our Midwives, Anne and Bridget, run our antenatal clinic at the surgery.
Antenatal classes are offered to all pregnant ladies and are held in the surgery. Classes cover
- giving birth
- pain relief, breathing and relaxation exercises
- breast feeding
- caring for your baby at home.
Both Midwife and Health Visitors (Jo, Micki and Lynn) run the classes and attendance is usually in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
As well as daytime classes, there are also some evening classes to give partners an opportunity to attend. Please ask the Midwife for details.
Home Visits
The Midwife usually visits new mothers and babies at home for a period of 10-14 days after birth, after which point Health Visitors continue to give advice regarding all health and parenting issues with your baby.
